Shaheen, Kaine, Van Hollen Statement on State Department’s Politicization of the Civil Service

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) issued the following statement after President Trump's executive order to Implement Schedule Policy/Career in the Excepted Service.

"The transfer of senior level positions into Schedule Policy/Career at the State Department is yet another disturbing example of the Trump Administration's politicization of America's civil service. Instead of increasing accountability and promoting merit-based practices, these positions will now be vulnerable to undue political pressure-putting U.S. national security in the crosshairs. At a time when Americans are struggling from rising costs due to President Trump's war with Iran, we need real expertise in the ranks of our civil service who are non-partisan, who are loyal to the constitution and who serve the interests of the American people."
