At Mexico's initiative, the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs today adopted a resolution to prevent the use of specialized equipment and controlled materials in the production of synthetic drugs such as fentanyl.
The resolution focuses on tableting and encapsulating machines, which have legitimate medical uses but are also employed in synthetic drug production. It calls on countries to adopt legislation to prevent tableting and encapsulating machines from being diverted to illicit markets while ensuring their unimpeded legal trade. It also highlights the importance of international cooperation and information sharing on suspicious commercial transactions and on investigations related to the trafficking of these machines for drug production.
The Mexican initiative seeks to give all countries tools to address the exponential growth in synthetic drug consumption, including through the abuse or misuse of medications. It also targets the corresponding shifts in the production, manufacture, trafficking, and commercialization of those drugs and their precursors. All of this takes place as part of a comprehensive strategy that prioritizes prevention and public health.
At the UN, Mexico reiterated that drug trafficking is an international challenge that can only be resolved through a humanist approach and coordinated action among countries, based on shared responsibilities and effective multilateral, regional, and bilateral cooperation.
This achievement is the result of Mexico's multilateral diplomatic efforts to address the challenges the international community faces in preventing and curbing the illicit trafficking of narcotics, including fentanyl. The resolution's adoption by a wide majority reflects the commitment and leadership brought to addressing this issue.
The Commission on Narcotic Drugs meets annually in Vienna, Austria. It is the UN's principal policymaking body on drug-related matters and is also responsible for overseeing the global challenges they pose.
