Carson City, NV - Today, Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford issued the following statement after President Donald Trump issued two executive orders attempting to restrict birthright citizenship. These orders come just weeks after Attorney General Ford worked with colleagues across the country to defeat President Trump's previous attempt to dismantle birthright citizenship in the Supreme Court.
"Birthright citizenship is enshrined in our Constitution. If a person is born in America, they are an American citizen.
The president is, once again, attempting to strip away citizenship from Americans. The last time President Trump attempted to unilaterally rewrite the Constitution, I sued him. Just two months ago, the Supreme Court rejected his attempt and upheld birthright citizenship as a constitutional right. The president has announced two new executive orders that would restrict birthright citizenship, and my office has immediately begun to review them. If these executive orders run afoul of the law, we will see the president in court and, just like last time, we will win.
While President Trump believes he can dismantle the Constitution with a wave of his hand, our nation's founders established the rule of law. We will teach him that lesson as many times as he needs to learn it."
