Grassley-Backed Infrastructure Law Delivers $2.5 Million in Environmental Protection Agency Funding to Clean Up Iowa Communities

WASHINGTON - Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) welcomed an announcement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that Iowa will receive $2.5 million in federal funding authorized by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which Grassley supported in 2021. The total includes $2 million in Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment and Cleanup (MAC) grants to accelerate the cleanup of polluted sites and $500,000 to one high-performing Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grantee.

The EPA defines a brownfield as a property where expansion, redevelopment or reuse could be complicated due to the presence, or potential presence, of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants. By helping to clean up and redevelop these properties, brownfield grants help transform spaces, safeguard public health and foster economic growth.

"I voted for the bipartisan infrastructure law to invest in Iowa and support clean air, land and water. These EPA funds will strengthen our communities and grow local economies," Grassley said. "In the Senate, I'll keep working to ensure our state gets the funding we need to help Iowa prosper."

Details on the EPA awards resulting from the bipartisan infrastructure law follow:

  • City of Burlington: $1,000,000 to fund an MAC grant to conduct brownfield inventories, planning, environmental assessments, community outreach and cleanup activities.
  • City of Dubuque: $500,000 to fund an Assessment grant to conduct brownfield inventories, planning, environmental assessments and community outreach.
  • Nahant Marsh Education Center: $500,000 to fund an Assessment grant to conduct brownfield inventories, planning, environmental assessments and community outreach.
  • East Central Intergovernmental Association: $500,000 to continue operating revolving loan funds that finance cleanup activities and promote redevelopment at brownfields sites.
