Venezuela Earthquakes: Your support is urgently needed

Right now, women and their communities in northern Venezuela are struggling through the aftermath of two devastating earthquakes that struck on the 24 June. Measuring up to 7.5 magnitude, the earthquakes hit on the eve of a national holiday when families were together in their homes. People living in La Guaira state and the capital Caracas were among the most affected.

More than 1,900 people have been killed. Thousands have been injured. Tens of thousands remain missing. Homes have been destroyed, communities torn apart and families are desperately searching for loved ones, filled with fear as uncertainty grows by the hour.

The disaster has struck a country already in crisis. After more than a decade of economic collapse, political instability and insecurity, millions have fled Venezuela. More than a third of those who remain are already living in extreme poverty, and around 8 million people struggled to access clean water, nutritious food and healthcare before the earthquakes hit.

Women and girls face increasing risks. They urgently need safe shelter, menstrual and hygiene supplies, reproductive healthcare, and protection from the heightened threat of gender-based violence and exploitation that often follows disasters like this.

All this is set against a backdrop of brutal global aid cuts, which is affecting millions of people across the world, including women and girls in Venezuela.

Humanitarian response in Venezuela

CARE has been active in Venezuela since 2018, working entirely through local partners, including Tinta Violeta, Uniandes and CESAP/CAFI Network in Venezeula to support communities impacted by this tragedy, especially women and girls who are most vulnerable in this moment.

Many of our partners are women-led organisations with chapters across the country. Currently, they are providing meals, psychosocial support as well as hygiene and dignity kits (including specialised items for women and girls and menstrual products). Our target locations are La Guaira, Capital District (Caracas), Táchira, Apure, Sucre, and Delta Amacuro.

How you can help people in Venezuela

We can't do it without you. We're asking for donations that can help provide the emergency relief women and families need to help them rebuild after losing everything to these disasters.

£10 could provide essential hygiene supplies for a family

£25 could help provide emergency food support to a family for a week

£50 could provide shelter kits for 3 families whose homes have been destroyed

Every hour counts. But together, we can help save thousands of lives.
