US 50 and US 287 Traffic signal replacement project in Lamar

Prowers County - The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner, Morton Electric, Inc., will begin a traffic signal replacement project on June 23 along US Highway 50 and US 287 in Lamar. Traffic signal replacement work will take place on a two-mile stretch of highway from Maple Street to Savage Avenue, mile point 435.1 on US 50 to MP 76.5 on US 287. The project will begin with test hole explorations and inspection of the existing conduit in June with signal replacement starting in September. The project is expected to be completed by the end of December.

The Lamar Traffic Signal Replacement project will upgrade the signals at three intersections in Lamar. The focus of the project is at the intersections of US 50 (Main Street) and Maple Street, US 287 (Main Street) and Cedar Street, and US 287 (Main Street) and Savage Avenue. The work includes replacement of the existing signal equipment, some minor ADA adjustments and the replacement of existing pavement markings. The traffic signal replacement will update the traffic signal infrastructure and implement ADA-compliant upgrades to the crosswalks.

Traffic Impacts

Beginning June 23, motorists will encounter road work at intersections on US 50 and US 287 in Lamar ― US 50 (Main Street) and Maple Street, US 287 (Main Street) and Cedar Street, and US 287 (Main Street) and Savage Avenue. Traffic impacts will include:

• Daytime work hours range from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with possible nighttime work for installation of the mast arms at each intersection
• Vehicles will be reduced to a single lane during various phases of the project
• Lane closures will have minimal delays

• Watch for workers. Drive with caution.

• Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
• Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
• Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
• Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
• Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
