The weeklong campaign supports the City's ongoing Vision Zero and transportation safety efforts by connecting residents with safety education, community resources and opportunities to engage with local partners committed to reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities.

"Preventing traffic injuries starts with giving people practical information and opportunities to put safe practices into action," said Health and Human Services Department Director Alison King. "Safe Streets Awareness Week connects our community with education and resources that can help people make safer choices when walking, biking, rolling or driving."

These events are made possible by California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Caltrans Active Transportation Program (ATP), and the Port of Long Beach. Over the past year, this funding has helped the City expand traffic safety education and outreach, reaching more than 8,300 community members through school presentations, youth programs, community events and safety demonstrations. The programs included 37 presentations at Long Beach Unified School District schools, peer-to-peer initiatives promoting safe driving and active transportation, and the distribution of 264 helmets and more than 3,200 bike lights and reflective safety items. Citywide media campaigns also focused on reducing distracted and drug-impaired driving.

The City is also advancing traffic safety through other programs designed to create safer streets for everyone. The Public Works Department's Neighborhood Traffic Management Program is currently addressing neighborhood traffic concerns through data-driven improvements, while its Speed Safety System will launch this fall to encourage safer driving and reduce speeding along some of the city's highest-need corridors.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information and registration details, visit longbeach.gov/walkandrolllb or contact the Health Department at 562.570.7995 or [email protected].
