SPRINGFIELD - U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today held a press conference at Springfield City Hall to announce a total of $1,350,000 in federal funding he secured for Springfield projects through Congressionally Directed Spending-more commonly known as earmarks -in the Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) funding bill. Durbin was joined by Mayor Misty Buscher and City Water Division Manager Todd LaFountain.
$900,000 of the funding will go to the City of Springfield to replace a 95-year-old water main on South Seventh Street between East Capitol Avenue and East Allen Street. The water main serves the historic downtown Springfield area, including Lincoln's Home Visitor Center, the Illinois State Police Memorial Park, Springfield Clinic, and the Elijah Iles House in Sangamon County.
$450,000 of the funding will go toward improving the Lincoln Home Visitor Center, including accessibility enhancements and updates to the public restrooms, welcome desk, exhibits, and theaters.
"I am thrilled to have secured federal funding for a 95-year-old water main replacement and updates to the Lincoln Home Visitor Center," said Durbin. "With America's 250th and Route 66's 100th anniversaries quickly approaching, Springfield will be better equipped to welcome students, families, and Lincoln aficionados."
"We are incredibly grateful to Senator Durbin for his continued advocacy and support for Springfield," said Mayor Misty Buscher. "This investment is critical to preserving our city's infrastructure and enhancing the experience for residents and visitors alike. Replacing this aging water main strengthens the reliability of essential services in our historic downtown, while improvements to the Lincoln Home Visitor Center ensure we are ready to showcase our city's rich history to a growing number of guests in the years ahead."
