Grassley Seeks Release of Government Records Recounting Nazi War Crimes

WASHINGTON - Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is calling on President Trump to issue an executive order mandating federal agencies to review, release and, where necessary, declassify all government records relating to Nazi war crimes, in compliance with the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act of 1998 (NWCDA). The request compliments Grassley's yearslong investigation into previously undisclosed and unknown Nazi-linked accounts at Credit Suisse and its predecessor banks, which are now under the ownership of UBS Group AG.

"The NWCDA was passed to ensure the fullest possible public disclosure of records relating to Nazi war crimes, Nazi perpetrators, and related matters," Grassley wrote. "The NWCDA reflected Congress's resolve that transparency, accountability, and historical truth are essential to preserving public confidence in government and ensuring that future generations understand the atrocities committed during World War II and the Holocaust."

"Although substantial progress in records identification and transparency has been made since the NWCDA's enactment, Congress retains an ongoing interest in ensuring that all federal agencies comply with the law," Grassley continued. "The passage of time, advances in technology, evolving declassifications, and the discovery of previously overlooked records make continued oversight necessary. The American people deserve confidence that federal agencies are faithfully executing the requirements established by Congress."
