On June 2, 2026, Elmedin Konaković, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, welcomed a delegation from the United States, led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, Daniel Lawton, in Sarajevo.
They discussed the current political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans, focusing on challenges affecting institutional functioning, reform implementation, and political stability.
Minister Konaković expressed gratitude to the United States for its continued strong support of Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly in safeguarding its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and constitutional order. He emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina views the United States as one of its most important strategic partners for strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring the country's long-term stability.
Special attention was given to the role of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with particular emphasis on the importance of the Office of the High Representative (OHR) in upholding the Dayton Peace Agreement, preserving the constitutional order, and ensuring the functioning of state institutions. Minister Konaković underscored that the OHR remains an essential mechanism of international support for implementing the Dayton Agreement and is a key factor in maintaining peace, stability, and legal security in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He stressed the need to preserve the full mandate and capabilities of the OHR. In this context, he pointed out that it is crucial for the future High Representative to possess a clear understanding of the political and security challenges facing Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region and to act decisively in safeguarding the Dayton Peace Agreement, peace, and stability.
The discussion also covered the improvement of Bosnia and Herzegovina's energy security, particularly focusing on the Southern Gas Interconnection project. Minister Konaković highlighted that this project represents a strategic interest for Bosnia and Herzegovina as it allows for the diversification of supply sources, strengthens the country's energy independence, and contributes to its overall economic and security resilience. He noted that energy diversification is not only a development issue but also a geopolitical and security matter of long-term importance for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.
The interlocutors reaffirmed the United States' strong support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina, considering these principles fundamental to preserving peace, stability, and democratic development in the country. They expressed a shared commitment to further strengthening the partnership between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States, as well as enhancing cooperation in the areas of energy, economic development, and reform processes.
