WFP welcomes support from Switzerland for the UN Humanitarian Air Service in Central African Republic

BANGUI, Central African Republic - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomes a USD825,000 contribution from the Government of Switzerland to provide essential air services to the humanitarian community in Central African Republic (CAR).

This funding will keep the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) flying for the next three months, providing reliable humanitarian air transport to remote and insecure areas, where commercial flights are unavailable.

"We are deeply grateful to the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation for their steadfast support. This funding will allow us to keep supporting the humanitarian aid workers and communities in need," said Mark Gordon, WFP Representative and Country Director in Central African Republic.

Decades of armed conflict and violence in the country have displaced millions of people from their homes and farms, disrupted farming, and essential social services, and leaving one in every three people in the country acutely food insecure. More than 1.6 million people remain forcibly displaced, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), Sudanese refugees, and returnees.

WFP and partners continue to deliver vital food assistance and support recovery efforts for crisis-affected communities, including young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and people on anti-retroviral treatment.

UNHAS remains the only reliable air service for aid workers in CAR, providing fast and safe access to hard-to-reach areas and ensuring humanitarian assistance gets where it's needed most. In 2025 alone, UNHAS transported 10,389 passengers, moved 89 tons of cargo, and carried out 12 medical evacuations, serving 127 humanitarian organizations.
