Science on Tap: Mushrooms in Space, Nov. 20

The UAA Department of Biological Sciences invites students and employees to join for this months Science on Tap, hosted by Turnagain Brewing, to hear from UAA's Dr. Philippe Amstislavski as he gives his talk "Mushrooms in Space: Mycelium Materials go to the Stars."

From the boreal forests to the edge of the galaxy, fungi may be humanity's most unlikely spacefaring ally! This talk will explore how mycelium - the root-like network of fungi - can be grown into sustainable, self-assembling materials for the extreme environments in the Arctic and space habitats, for cold and radiation shielding, and life-support systems. Drawing on their NASA collaboration and Arctic field testing, Dr. Philippe Amstislavski will share how these living materials could help astronauts build, repair, and survive on the ISS, Moon, Mars - while also transforming the way we make materials back on Earth.

Event location - Turnagain Brewing
