On Friday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Germany's Chief of Defense, General Carsten Breuer, and a delegation of German Army generals visiting Lithuania.
The President emphasized that the deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania is strong proof of strategic partnership, reinforcing the security of both Lithuania and NATO's entire eastern flank.
"Germany is a steadfast strategic ally of Lithuania. I am grateful for its professionalism and long-term commitment to the security of Lithuania and the entire region. Germany's role in ensuring peace on the eastern flank is exceptional," the President said.
The President noted that the inauguration of the 45th German Brigade "Lithuania" in Vilnius this past May clearly reflected the message expressed by Chancellor Friedrich Merz's during his visit: "Lithuania's security is also Germany's security."
During the meeting, the President highlighted that the brigade's deployment is progressing smoothly and ahead of schedule. Lithuania is fulfilling all commitments related to hosting the brigade within the agreed timelines, and the advanced military infrastructure at the Rūdninkai training area is taking concrete shape.
The President also underscored that Lithuania and Germany cooperate actively in international missions. This October, 43 Lithuanian troops were deployed to the NATO-led international operation in Kosovo (KFOR), where they serve under German contingent leadership. According to the President, this demonstrates a mature partnership and Lithuania's reliable contribution to international security.
Significant attention during the discussion was also devoted to cooperation in the defense industry. Lithuania is one of the most active partners in the German defense sector, with current acquisitions from Germany amounting to more than 2 billion euros. The President stressed the importance of expanding industrial cooperation and noted that the construction of the Rheinmetall ammunition plant has already begun in Baisogala.
Gitanas Nausėda further emphasized the broader potential of Lithuania-Germany relations - political, economic and societal. Special focus is being placed on the integration of German military families in Lithuania, particularly through the development of educational infrastructure.
During their visit to Lithuania on December 5-7, German Army generals will familiarize themselves with the German brigade element deployed in the country and assess progress in readiness, infrastructure development and other integration matters.
