SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -

Dr. Jeff Groff, professor of physics and environmental science at Shepherd University, has published a new book that explores Yellowstone National Park through the interconnected perspectives of science, history, ecology, and personal discovery.

The Rocinante in Wonderland: A Yellowstone Story is based on Shepherd University's interdisciplinary Yellowstone field course, which Groff developed to give students opportunities to engage directly with one of the nation's most significant natural and cultural landscapes.

Drawing on experiences from the field course, the book explores the geological forces that shaped Yellowstone, the ecological processes that continue to influence the region, and the people who have interacted with the landscape over time. Topics range from the volcanic activity that powers the park's geothermal features to wildlife management, conservation efforts, and the history of Indigenous communities whose connections to the area predate the creation of the national park.

"The Yellowstone course is about more than learning facts," said Groff. "It's about students developing the kind of understanding, appreciation, and connection that inspires them to defend the park. Achieving this requires combining interdisciplinary learning with first-hand experience. The experiential component is essential."

The book also examines the development of the national park movement and evolving ideas that have shaped the stewardship of public lands in the United States.

Throughout the narrative, Groff reflects on the educational value of place-based learning. By moving beyond the traditional classroom and engaging directly with the natural environment, students are encouraged to observe closely, ask questions, and develop a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between people and place.

Groff celebrated the launch of his book on Friday, June 13, at the Shepherdstown Public Library.

Upcoming opportunities to learn more about the book include:

  • An author discussion at Four Seasons Books, 114 W German St, Shepherdstown. The talk begins at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 12.
  • A lecture in the Byrd Auditorium at the National Conservation Training Center, 698 Conservation Way, Shepherdstown, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 20.

Published by Starlight Studio, The Rocinante in Wonderland: A Yellowstone Story is available through major online booksellers and directly through the publisher. Proceeds from the book support educational initiatives that encourage experiential learning and exploration.

Groff has taught at Shepherd University for more than two decades and was named the 2019 West Virginia Professor of the Year. He holds a Ph.D. in applied science from the College of William & Mary and developed Shepherd's interdisciplinary Yellowstone field course to bring together environmental science, physics, history, and public policy through immersive, place-based learning experiences.
