On Mother’s Day, Trump’s Out-of-Touch and Expensive Agenda is Hurting Moms and Their Families Arrow

Ahead of Mother's Day, Donald Trump is making life harder for mothers across the country - from slashing life-saving maternal health care to forcing new moms to "panic-buy" essentials that keep their babies safe and healthy. Just last week, the Trump administration even began dismantling the federal agency responsible for keeping unsafe toys, cribs, and other essentials out of Americans' homes. Families are bracing for empty shelves in the childcare section, as they already face skyrocketing grocery bills, and higher costs across the board - and they know Trump is to blame.

Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies slashed maternal health care and fertility programs that millions of families rely on.

CNN: "Whether it's new mothers' postpartum survival, HIV prevention in LGBTQ populations or higher risk of aggressive breast cancer in Black women, many studies necessitate a focus on the people most affected, those experts say. The NIH cut research in all those areas. …

"In 2023, the NIH launched a $168 million initiative across 10 universities to improve maternal health care.

"In March, the agency canceled funding to two of them."

Politico: "Clinics begin closing as Trump admin continues freeze on family planning funds"

Washington Post: "Fertility and maternal health programs slashed, alarming experts"

"Experts say the fallout will hit patients directly: Couples trying to conceive could lose access to information about clinics, treatments and their chances of success."

Thanks to Trump's chaotic and expensive agenda, new mothers are forced to "panic buy" baby necessities as supply shortages loom.

Washington Post: "Trump's tariffs hit baby industry hard, threatening parents with price hikes, shortages"

"Tariffs on Chinese goods are making it more expensive to raise children in the United States, driving up prices and threatening shortages of critical baby gear at a time when household budgets are already under strain. …

"But with new tariffs more than doubling the cost of Chinese imports, prices on baby necessities are rising fast. And manufacturers and retailers are suddenly slamming on the brakes, halting months' worth of shipments, a move that economists warn will lead to shortages of strollers, cribs and other necessities as early as this month.

"'Baby products are not only critical, they're required by law in many cases, like car seats,' said Lisa Trofe, executive director of the [Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association], which is expecting overall markups of about 30 percent."

Associated Press: "Strollers and other baby products will get more expensive - and harder to find - with tariffs"

"But tariffs - ranging from 10% for imports from most countries to 145% for imports from China - will make it many times more expensive for new parents. …

"Elizabeth Mahon, the owner of Three Littles, a baby store in Washington, said she's worried the tariffs will make essential products too expensive for some families."

The Trump administration also began dismantling the independent federal agency responsible for protecting children from unsafe toys, strollers, and other everyday products.

NPR: "The Democratic members of an independent agency dedicated to protecting Americans from dangerous products and issuing recalls and safety warnings were fired by President Trump via an overnight email."

Washington Post: "The CPSC regulates the safety of everyday consumer products, such as strollers, toasters and bicycles. It enforces safety standards and coordinates product safety recalls, such as banning dangerous phthalate chemicals from plastic children's toys and pushing companies to recall furniture that tips, creating a crushing hazard for children, or jogging strollers at risk of falling apart."
