On 1 March, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, spoke by telephone with Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait ahead of the extraordinary EU Foreign Affairs Council.
During the conversations, the head of Lithuania's diplomacy discussed the security situation in the Middle East and across the Gulf Arab states, and possible actions of the international community to de-escalate the situation.
"Lithuania strongly condemns Iran's attacks on Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Jordan, and other countries. This is a serious violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of these states, threatening the regional and wider international security architecture. Lithuania expresses its full solidarity with Kuwait, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and all affected countries," Budrys said in an interview with Minister of Kuwait.
Lithuania regrets that talks on Iran's nuclear and missile programmes have failed.
"Iran cannot be allowed to acquire or develop a nuclear weapon. The United States has repeatedly warned Iran of possible consequences. Now the Iranian regime is reaping what it has sown," Budrys said.
According to the Minister, Iran's actions continue to pose a threat not only to the security of the Middle East and the Gulf region, but also to international stability as a whole. Iran has consistently supported Russia's war against Ukraine, for which it has been targeted by strict EU sanctions.
