McMurry University is proud to announce the appointment of Leo Brownfield IV as the inaugural head coach of the University's newly established women's flag football program, which will begin competition in 2027. The addition of the program marks an expansion of McMurry's athletic offerings and underscores the University's commitment to creating new opportunities for student-athletes.
Brownfield brings extensive experience to the role, both as a coach and a player. He joined the McMurry football staff in 2024 as running backs coach, helping guide the team to back-to-back SCAC championships. He also leads the Fieldhouse flag football league. Brownfield competed at the collegiate level for McMurry University and East Texas Baptist University and later played professionally for the Orlando Predators arena football team. His background provides a strong foundation in leadership, technical expertise, and a passion for launching new programs.
"We are thrilled to elevate Coach Brownfield into this new role as the head of our women's flag football program," said Larry Dockery, McMurry University director of athletics. "Having already contributed significantly to McMurry athletics as a coach with our men's football team, he brings a deep understanding of our culture, our student-athletes, and our mission."
Brownfield said he is eager to begin shaping the foundation of the new program. "The opportunity to build something from the ground up is special. Being the first head coach means we get to set the standard, the culture, and the expectations from day one. That's exciting and something I don't take lightly," he said.
The introduction of women's flag football at McMurry aligns with rapid national growth in the sport. According to the National Football League, participation among women increased 63% between 2019 and 2023. McMurry University is excited to join this expanding movement and to create pathways for athletic excellence and educational opportunity.
Recruiting for the inaugural roster is already underway. Prospective student-athletes are encouraged to contact the McMurry Athletics Department for more information.
