"The United Nations recently took steps to remove terror-related sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. And I welcome the results of today's meeting, including another 180 days of temporary sanctions relief. At this critical moment after over a decade of civil war, I hope President al-Sharaa's visit to Washington marks a step words achieving a stable and secure Syria and brighter future for the Syrian people.
Last month I co-sponsored legislation to repeal the Caesar Sanctions, which were initially implemented to hold the Assad regime accountable. Lifting these sanctions will allow for investment and economic growth for Syrian families and businesses and deter terrorism. I am committed to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to promote a free, democratic Syria, and permanently lift these sanctions as soon as possible."
