Congresswoman Simon Announces Her Inaugural CA-12 Congressional App Challenge

Oakland, CA - Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (D-CA-12) is announcing her inaugural CA-12 Congressional App Challenge (CAC), an app competition for students in middle and high school that promotes STEM education and innovation.

"The Bay Area is andhas always been a pioneering force for technological innovation. There is so much genius right here at home in the East Bay, which is why I am excited to announce my office's first ever CA-12 Congressional App Challenge," said Congresswoman Simon. "It's incredibly important to me that students in our district from all backgrounds have opportunities to learn, dream, and succeed so that they can continue to build more inclusive economies and transform their own communities."

The Congressional App Challenge is the official computer science competition of the House of Representatives. The challenge is open to all middle and high school students in California's 12thCongressional District. Submissions must include an original app, a demonstration video, and a brief project description. Winners will have their app displayed in the U.S. Capitol, featured on the official Congressional App Challenge website, and receive an invitation to a national celebration in Washington, D.C.

More information on the CA-12 Congressional App Challenge and how to participate can be found below:

Individual students, or teams of up to four, from California's 12th Congressional District can register and submit their applications until October 30, 2025 through CongressionalAppChallenge.us. The competition is open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements, regardless of coding experience.

We strongly encourage students of all skill levels to participate and learn how to create their own apps. Their apps are eligible to be featured on display in the U.S. Capitol building, on house.gov, and on the Congressional App Challenge website.

Recognizing the racial, gender, and other disparities that disadvantaged communities often face in the tech sector, the CAC also focuses on inclusivity by making the Challenge as accessible as possible to people from all backgrounds. Deliberate efforts will be made to include students from all backgrounds, including those who are traditionally underrepresented in the tech industry.
