Armistice Day and Remembrance events are being held in Portsmouth to honour those who have fallen in service to the country.
Residents are invited to attend two public events organised by Portsmouth City Council:
City of Portsmouth Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade
Sunday 9 November, 10.30am-12pm in Guildhall Square. The service will be preceded by a parade of veterans, military personnel and youth groups in the square starting from 10.30am. At 11am there will be a two-minute silence followed by the service. A wreath-laying ceremony at the World War I Cenotaph and World War II Memorial will conclude the morning's services.
Armistice Day Service
Tuesday 11 November, 10.45am at the Cenotaph, Guildhall Square. This short service starts at 10.45am and will include a two-minute silence at the traditional 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. During the service there will be a selection of readings and poems.
Travelling to the Events
Visitors driving from outside the city are encouraged to use Portsmouth Park and Ride, which is conveniently located off Junction 1 of the M275. Residents and visitors are advised to plan their journeys in advance and consider alternative ways to travel, such as walking, cycling, hiring a rental e-scooter or bike, or taking the bus.
Ahead of the services, the city council has had the cenotaph and memorial steam cleaned by an expert local cleaning company with experience of working with delicate memorial stonework. This gentler method ensures the delicate Portland stone isn't damaged, and because of this not all of the staining was removed.
The council is planning a more thorough clean of the monuments ahead of next year's Portsmouth 100, when huge celebrations are planned to mark the 100th anniversary of Portsmouth's city status.
