Current CBS News anchor and former WIVB-TV reporter Jericka Duncan visited Buffalo State's campus to speak to journalism students on Wednesday, September 10. Duncan came to Buffalo to receive an award from the Buffalo Broadcasters Association during its Hall of Fame dinner that evening. (Three Buffalo State alumni and one employee were also honored at the event.)
Duncan, who has been a CBS news correspondent since 2013, began her career in 2005 in nearby Elmira, New York, where she covered the search for Ralph "Bucky" Phillips, the longest manhunt for a fugitive in state history. She was a reporter for WIVB (CBS) in Buffalo from 2007 to 2010, during which time she received a local Emmy Award in the Best Morning Show category for her winter storm coverage in 2008. In 2009, she was one of the first reporters at the scene of a plane crash near Buffalo that killed 50 people. Her coverage contributed to the station winning two national Edward M. Murrow Awards.
Duncan was interviewed by Ellen Notarius, lecturer in Buffalo State's Communication Department, who was formerly a WIVB reporter alongside Duncan. Duncan shared anecdotes about stories she has covered and how she launched her career and answered questions from students. A CBS News crew recorded her presentation, which aired the next day on CBS Mornings.
"Jericka Duncan's visit to Buffalo State University changed how I look at my future," said Matthew Barton, a junior journalism major. "As she explained her path to where she is today, I realized that I don't have to have everything figured out overnight. Every step of my journey is a separate building block to my future."
"This was a tremendous opportunity for our student journalists to learn about the day-to-day life of a nationally prominent journalist," added Deborah Silverman, chair of Buffalo State's Communication Department.
On Wednesday evening, the Buffalo Broadcasters Association inducted Duncan into its Hall of Fame.
"When you truly believe in yourself, that is when you know you've made it," Duncan said during her acceptance speech. "When you walk in your authenticity, that is when you have arrived. Not because of an award, not because you made it to network, but because you believe in yourself and you know you're doing the right thing."
