Schenectady Man Sentenced to 240 Months for Distribution and Possession of Child Pornography

Gregory Magin, age 46, of Glenville, New York, was sentenced on August 4, 2026 to 240 months for distribution and possession of child pornography.

First Assistant United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III; Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Division Craig Tremaroli; and New York State Police (NYSP) Superintendent Steven G. James made the announcement.

As part of his guilty plea, Magin admitted that in July 2024, using an Internet-based messaging application ("application"), he encouraged the production of multiple child pornography videos by another user who was actively sexually abusing a 14-year-old child. Magin then used the application to distribute one of those child pornography videos to another user. Additionally, during that same month, Magin possessed and distributed approximately 14 child pornography videos to other users of the application, including a video depicting the sexual abuse of a prepubescent child.

First Assistant United States Attorney Sarcone stated: "Words cannot describe the horror that child victims endure at the hands of people like Gregory Magin. That nightmare does not end when the abuse stops but sticks with these children for the rest of their lives. Magin will have 20 years in prison to think about the pain that he has caused to these children. We are thankful for our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners that investigated this case and uncovered Magin's crimes."

"Mr. Magin's actions were horrifying, which is exactly why he's going to federal prison for two decades," said Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Division. "Today, our thoughts are with the victims whose abuse was not just encouraged by this monster but perpetuated through his distribution. The FBI will continue to relentlessly investigate these dangerous predators and ensure their victims are delivered the justice they deserve."

NYSP Superintendent Steven G. James stated: "Anyone who engages in any type of predatory acts against children should understand that such crimes will not be tolerated. The evidence gathered and work done by the State Police and our law enforcement partners, lead to this sentencing and ensures the defendant will serve time for his deplorable crimes. I commend our State Police members, the United States Attorney's Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Albany Division for their steady and proactive work on this case."

In addition to the 20 years of imprisonment, United States District Court Judge Mae A. D'Agostino imposed 15 years of supervised release, a $40,000 fine, special assessments, forfeiture, and directed restitution to victims of the offense.

FBI-Albany, Colonie Police Department, and the New York State Police investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney A.J. Vickey prosecuted this case as part of Project Safe Childhood.

Project Safe Childhood is a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
