NEW YORK - Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision to uphold birthright citizenship, striking down President Trump's executive order seeking to limit the Constitutional guarantee that nearly all children born on U.S. soil are citizens. According to the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, two-thirds of all New York City residents are first- or second-generation New Yorkers.
Lisa Rivera, President and CEO of the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) issued the following statement:
"The Supreme Court's decision to reaffirm the Constitutional guarantee that children born in the U.S. receive the full rights of citizenship is a huge relief for immigrant and mixed-status families and all Americans who share the core belief that our nation is stronger through diversity.
"Today's ruling, delivered on the eve of America's 250th anniversary, fittingly and unequivocally reasserts the long-held promise that all people born on U.S. soil deserve all due rights of citizenship - regardless of their parents' immigration status or how long their family has lived here. And yet, the dissenting opinions are also a stark reminder of the ways in which our laws are at risk of being upended with real devastating impact on our children, our city, our country.
"We welcome and applaud the Court's majority decision to uphold birthright citizenship and reassert that all people born in America deserve equal rights, equal recognition under the law, and equal standing in the place they call their home."
On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin reached a handshake deal on a $125.8 billion City budget for Fiscal Year 2027.
Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 opinion that President Trump could unilaterally end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants whose countries face natural disaster, war, famine, and economic instability. For nearly two decades, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) has served hundreds of Haitian TPS recipients.
On Wednesday evening, the New York State legislature passed a $268.5 billion New York State Budget for Fiscal Year 26-27. The final spending plan includes investments of $1.5 billion in new Medicaid funding, $82.4 million for immigrant legal services, and $50 million for the Housing Access Voucher Program (HAVP) pilot.
NYLAG served 1,200 vets & recovered $700K in benefits in 2025.
On Tuesday evening, federal agents released Alexander, a 21-year-old immigrant who ICE detained Tuesday morning in the halls of 26 Federal Plaza. ICE arrested Alexander mere hours after a federal judge barred federal agents from making arrests at New York City immigration courts Monday evening.
NYLAG - with New York University - are representing Alexander on the habeas petition.
