Velázquez Statement on Lifting of Terrorism Designation for Cuba

January 14, 2025

WASHINGTON- Today, Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement after the Biden administration announced its decision to lift the U.S. designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism (SSOT):

"President Trump's decision to redesignate Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism was a vindictive move that has only worsened life for the Cuban people without advancing U.S. interests. This designation has made it harder for Cubans to access humanitarian aid, banking services, and the ability to travel abroad. It has also deepened food and medicine shortages and worsened the island's energy crisis, especially after Hurricane Rafael. These hardships have driven an unprecedented wave of migration, leading to the largest exodus in Cuba's history. Trump's SSOT designation has failed both to make America safer and to support the Cuban people.

"Since 2021, I've urged the Biden administration to reverse this harmful policy. This action is long overdue, but it is welcome. Removing Cuba from the SSOT list will allow for critical supplies like food and medicine to reach those in need and help address the island's economic crisis. It also creates an opportunity for meaningful dialogue between our nations on key issues. This decision marks an essential step toward improving the lives of the Cuban people and building a more constructive relationship between our countries."
