Boston (May 26, 2026) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement after the passing of former Massachusetts State Representative Benjamin Swan.
"State Representative Benjamin Swan was a lifelong public servant, consummate statesman, and champion for civil and human rights.
"As a young activist and organizer, he rallied countless advocates in the Civil Rights movement, joining historic demonstrations in the South and leading efforts in Massachusetts. Later, as one of the Commonwealth's longest serving and most prominent state legislators, he became widely known as the conscience of the House of Representatives, fighting boldly and unapologetically for marginalized individuals, communities, and causes.
"Our Commonwealth and our nation are better and more just because of his service, and his lasting achievements and legacy stand as an inspiration for all those who carry the mantle today. My thoughts are with the Swan family, the people of Springfield, and all those who knew and loved State Representative Swan."
