Publication of the 'G7 Cyber Expert Group Statement on Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity'

The G7 Cyber Expert Group (CEG) has released its 'Statement on AI and Cybersecurity', a comprehensive document that explores the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the cybersecurity of the global financial system. The G7 CEG's statement encourages jurisdictions to monitor ongoing developments and to proactively address the emerging cybersecurity risks that AI could pose.

As AI technologies are becoming increasingly prevalent, the document underscores their transformative influence on the financial sector. These innovations provide significant opportunities to strengthen operational resilience and improve risk management; however, they also introduce new vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malicious actors to intensify cyberattacks, develop sophisticated malware, and automate social engineering and disinformation techniques, such as phishing and impersonation.

The statement is addressed to supervisory authorities and financial institutions, encouraging them to:

  • integrate AI-related risks into existing risk management frameworks;
  • reinforce data governance and cybersecurity;
  • enhance internal expertise and foster collaboration across public institutions, private entities, and the academic community.
