(New Britain, CT - April 29, 2026) - The Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA or the Authority) has been notified that its Gas Pipeline Safety Program has achieved a perfect score on its annual evaluation, an accomplishment that has been realized for over 15 years.
On March 30 - April 2, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) conducted its annual examination of PURA's Gas Pipeline Safety Program, including all activities, program procedures and records for the 2025 calendar year. After a thorough assessment, it was determined that the CT PURA Gas Pipeline Safety Program scored perfectly in both the progress report review and the program evaluation review.
PURA is responsible for pipeline safety in Connecticut. The Authority regulates pipeline safety on over 15,000 miles of gas distribution lines and inspects over 598 miles on interstate gas transmission lines through an agreement with the PHMSA. Over 93 miles of hazardous liquid lines are regulated by PHMSA, and in 2025 there were zero reportable incidents under PURA's purview.
"We are so fortunate as a state to have one of the best gas pipeline safety programs in the nation," said Interim Chairman Tom Wiehl, "and we at PURA could not be more proud of the consistent exceptional performance of our Gas Pipeline Safety Unit. They are a team of highly qualified and experienced professionals, and they work tirelessly every day to ensure our communities are safe. Along with my fellow commissioners, I applaud this most recent confirmation of GPSU's excellence."
