Washington, D.C. - This week, U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (CA-02) issued the following statement regarding his opposition to the PIPES Act of 2025 in the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure:
"The PIPES Act of 2025 fails to adequately address the environmental crises and safety risks posed by our country's outdated pipeline system, and I cannot support legislation that threatens the health and safety of all Americans," said Rep. Huffman. "We've seen that communities can so easily be exposed to dangerous levels of carbon dioxide, and relaxing safety standards for natural gas pipelines would be detrimental. Pipeline developers also stand to make billions from taxpayer subsidies, yet local communities are left without the resources, training, or equipment to respond when disaster strikes - which has created an unacceptable imbalance."
"Pipeline safety, environmental protection, climate responsibility, and transparency are not optional - they are integral to any pipeline infrastructure legislation that I would support. These decisions must respect community voices and tribal sovereignty, as no community should be forced to shoulder the risks of these projects without a meaningful say in the processes. Ignoring them is not just irresponsible - it's dangerous, especially as this administration pushes pipeline projects without adequate oversight or safeguards," Rep. Huffman concluded. "Until this bill meaningfully incorporates these protections, I cannot support it. Our communities deserve infrastructure that is safe, resilient, and aligned with our climate goals. We must do better."
