Pam Stout Recognized as Friend of FACCT for Ag Literacy Efforts in Knox County

Each year in November the Tennessee agricultural community hosts Tennessee Agricultural Literacy Week - an initiative that brings agriculture into classrooms through volunteer readers and educational books. The Farm Animal Care Coalition of Tennessee (FACCT) is a strong leader in the efforts of this week, and as such, always recognizes an outstanding member with their Friend of FACCT award. This year's award winner was Pam Stoutt of Knox County, a longtime Farm Bureau member and strong leader in the Farm Bureau Women's Leadership Committee.

Over the course of just one week and a day in 2024, Stoutt visited 8 schools and read to nearly 911 students. Sharing stories and lessons about farming, food and animal care, Stout showed her love for agriculture and taught the importance of the industry to students.

"I love being around little children and just seeing the excitement they get when you're reading and explaining to them about agriculture," said Stoutt. "Most kids today don't have an understanding of what agriculture is about or farming, so we've got to break it down to simple words they can understand."

Going above and beyond for agricultural literacy, Stoutt has won the Friend of FACCT award three years in a row. But for Stoutt, it's not about awards or recognition. It's about making a difference in the lives of the students she reads to.

"We need to get more people involved in Ag Literacy Week," she urged. "If they would just go one time and see how excited the kids are, how they pay attention and ask thoughtful questions-they're absorbing what we're teaching them. That's why it's important to teach about agriculture, so they have a better understanding of where their food, fiber, forestry and fuel come from."

It's because of this attitude and so much more that she more than deserves this special recognition. Her enthusiasm and consistent involvement connect classrooms to agriculture - one book and one student at a time.
