Philadelphia Soccer 2026 and U.S. Soccer Foundation unveil first two mini-pitches as part of FIFA World Cup 26™ legacy programming

Philadelphia Soccer 2026, the 501c3 non-profit that serves as the Local Host Committee charged with planning and executing FIFA World Cup 26™ in coordination with the City of Philadelphia, and the U.S. Soccer Foundation proudly unveiled the first two of 10 planned mini-pitches in Philadelphia this week, marking a significant milestone in their joint effort to expand access to soccer and youth development opportunities throughout the region ahead of FIFA World Cup 26™.

The mini-pitches, located at Swenson Arts & Technology High School and Building 21, are part of Philadelphia Soccer's "26 for 26" legacy initiative - a $2 million commitment to create safe, accessible play spaces and deliver long-term community impact across Pennsylvania through soccer-related infrastructure and programming. In partnership with the School District of Philadelphia, each unveiling event brought together students, educators, and community leaders to celebrate the power of soccer to unite and inspire.

"These mini-pitches are more than just places to play - they're gateways to equity. They represent our belief that every child deserves access to the game and to the opportunities it brings - teamwork, confidence, and a sense of belonging." said Melissa Piccoli, Chief External Affairs Officer for Philadelphia Soccer 2026. "As we prepare to welcome the world in 2026, our legacy begins now, on the ground, in our neighborhoods."

On Thursday, October 23, students at Swenson High School took part in a high-energy celebration, complete with a ceremonial "first kick" to open their mini-pitch, presented by Independence Blue Cross. Every student received a custom jersey and Philadelphia Soccer swag.

"IBX is proud to partner with Philadelphia Soccer 2026 on this critical initiative to provide access to safe play spaces. Playtime is foundational to both physical and mental health, and as the soccer world prepares to come to Philadelphia, we're excited to help build a legacy that supports the next generation," said Stephen P. Fera, EVP of Public Affairs and President of Government Markets at Independence Blue Cross.

The excitement continued on Friday, October 24 at Building 21, where students and staff gathered to christen a new mini-pitch sponsored by Comcast and designed to serve as a year-round hub for youth soccer activities, pickup games, and community programming. Featuring an appearance by Philadelphia Union mascot Phang, the event also included remarks from local school and community stakeholders and giveaways.

"At Comcast, we believe in the power of sports to bring people together and build stronger communities," said Bret Perkins, SVP of External and Government Affairs at Comcast. "Not only are we installing a pitch, but we're also creating opportunity, pride, and momentum for our youth. We're proud to support Philadelphia Soccer 2026's legacy programming."

Each pitch features a small-sided, hardcourt design that encourages play in dense urban areas and promotes inclusivity, safety, and engagement.

"These projects represent the heart of our mission - to ensure every child has a place to play and grow through the game of soccer," said Ed Foster-Simeon, President & CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. "We're honored to partner on this legacy initiative in Philadelphia to ensure the tournament has a positive impact for generations to come and thrilled to see the community embrace it."

The remaining projects will be completed throughout the city and state over the course of the next year, ensuring that FIFA World Cup 26™ leaves a legacy that extends far beyond the final whistle.
