Michal Kopera, associate professor of computational mathematics, has been appointed to serve as co-director of the Computing Ph.D. program, the Boise State School of Computing announced.
Michal Kopera, Department of MathematicsKopera brings extensive expertise in computational and applied mathematics, specializing in numerical methods for ocean modeling, high-performance scientific computing and scientific software development. In addition to his research, Kopera is deeply engaged in student mentorship, currently advising two doctoral students and celebrating the graduation of another this previous year.
"Dr. Kopera's ongoing partnership with the Computing Ph.D. program is a great success story," School of Computing Director Ira Burton said. "We are very excited to have him in a leadership role to leverage his advising experience to continue growing relationships across the university."
Since its launch in 2016, the interdisciplinary Computing Ph.D. program has flourished into Boise State's fastest growing doctoral program. The vibrant academic community has graduated 45 doctoral students and welcomed 18 students this fall. The program now supports 82 doctoral students and 41 advisors spanning the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, and others.
Kopera's appointment was confirmed with the support of Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Marie-Anne de Graaff, and the Department of Mathematics Associate Professor and Chair Margaret Kinzel.
"I am honored to serve as the Co-Director of the Computing Ph.D. program and support students on their journey to innovate and integrate various areas of study," Kopera said. "As a graduate of a similar program, I am dedicated to fostering an environment where our doctoral students can thrive as scholars, ready to address the pressing computational challenges of the future."
With Kopera's fresh co-leadership, the School of Computing is confident the Computing Ph.D. program will continue to expand its impact, preparing graduates to address complex computational challenges and drive innovation across disciplines at Boise State and beyond.
