Luminous Landscape: Color & Composition
with Philip Frey
Description: This is your opportunity for a fun, relaxing, and in-depth exploration of composition and color theory in landscape painting with Maine artist, Philip Frey. He will present composition tools as used by the Old Masters, color theory, as well as best photo and sketching practices. Students will be working from their own landscape reference material. Each day will include a short demo, a lecture on color or composition, a lesson, and a critique of students' work. Philip will be demonstrating in oil color. Pre-class instructions and materials list will be supplied at registration.
Levels: Open to all mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolor, and gouache. All levels welcome, but artists should be familiar with their medium of choice and have a good foundation in drawing.
Artist Statement: My teaching goal is to help you improve your work and develop your own approach to painting, while focusing on the fundamentals of drawing and painting. My classes emphasize composition and color and the history and language of art, rather than painting in a particular style. The aim is to have you come away from my classes and workshops excited about painting and your work!
About the Instructor: In the past twenty years, Philip Frey has developed into one of Maine's finest landscape painters. Known as a brilliant colorist, Frey paints Maine's harbors and islands with a bold and sensitive palette that captures the light and moods of his home state, from the streets of Ellsworth and Portland to Monhegan and Acadia National Park. Philip is known for his engaging, illuminating, and positive teaching style. He is skilled at addressing his students' abilities and helping them mature as artists. His monograph, Philip Frey: Here and Now, by Daniel Kany and Carl Little, was published in 2018. He exhibits at Courthouse Gallery Fine Art, Greenhut Galleries, Edgewater Gallery, and Carver Hill Gallery. His work will be featured in a solo exhibition at Courthouse Gallery Fine Art and group exhibitions at Greenhut Galleries in 2026.
Student Testimonial: "I have taken many YouTube workshops, two workshops abroad, and several online, and Frey is my favorite teacher - so clear, so many helpful techniques to apply, and so kind and insightful in his critique. This sets the stage always for a wonderful experience for everyone."
