PROVIDENCE, RI - Today, after police responded to an active shooter at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon where several children and a teacher were reportedly killed by a 16-year old gunman, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) issued the following statement:
"We are heartbroken for the Silver Rail Elementary School community and the people of Oregon. Tonight, another community is faced with the tragedy of gun violence at school and more families are reeling from the unimaginable. Children should be safe at school and gun violence should not be so prevalent in our society.
"It is far past time for the Roberts Court to make it clear their decision on guns does not endorse unfettered and unregulated access to weapons. In the absence of the Supreme Court ceasing its pro-gun rulings, Republicans need to join Democrats in enacting commonsense policies that could prevent these kinds of tragedies."
