WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) released the following statement after voting to pass legislation to fund critical government agencies, avert a partial government shutdown, and give Congress a two-week opportunity to negotiate guardrails to rein in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP):
"The lawlessness of this regime is rampant and grows more dangerous by the day. Tonight, I voted to give Congress two weeks to negotiate immediate, common-sense guardrails to rein in the lawlessness of ICE and CBP, such as requiring officers to take off the masks and ending the roving patrols terrorizing our communities. Over the next two week, the onus will be on Republicans to agree to the serious reforms Democrats are demanding. I will continue my work fighting for other reforms, including giving people the ability to hold lawless government agents accountable."
