CTDOT Plans for Replacement of Roadway Illumination Systems in various towns

1/13/2026

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans for the replacement of roadway illumination systems in Bloomfield, Middletown and Berlin.

The project involves the replacement of an existing roadway lighting system at the following locations:

  • Route 218 from West of Chapel Street (mile 4.17) to East of Blue Hills Avenue (mile 5.09) in Bloomfield
  • Route 3 from Washington Street (mile 0.00) to south of Newfield Street Rear (mile
  • 0.44) in Middletown
  • Route 9 from Roberts Street (mile 22.69) to south of Aircraft Road (mile 19.03) in Middletown
  • Route 9 and Route 15 Interchange (Route 9 mile 31.18 to 32.77 and Route 15 mile 71.29 to 71.69) in Berlin
  • Route 372 at the Route 9 overlap (mile 9.16 to 10.08)in Berlin
  • Route 572 to the Route 372 intersection (mile 0.00 to 0.12) in Berlin

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in January 2027, with construction anticipated to start in the spring of 2027, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding, and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with 80% federal and 20% state funds.

It is the CTDOT's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with the CTDOT to assist in the project's development. Due to the maintenance like and limited nature of the proposed work, it is not anticipated that a public informational meeting will be necessary for this project.
