Mid-season irrigation check: Stay on schedule and reduce water waste

Summer heat places the highest demand on Fort Worth's water system. Your irrigation system plays a major role in that demand.

That's why the Fort Worth Water Department is encouraging residents to schedule a no-cost SmartIrrigation Assessment to confirm their systems are operating efficiently and within ordinance guidelines.

The City's irrigation ordinance limits outdoor watering to twice per week and prohibits irrigation between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Remote meter readings detect high water use during restricted times. Many residents are unaware that their systems may be running outside allowed hours.

Mid-season issues often include:

• Sprinkler heads knocked out of alignment by lawn equipment.

• Leaks or broken components, which waste water.

• Controllers running past midnight onto the wrong watering day.

• Timers that reset after power interruptions.

What the assessment includes

Licensed irrigation professionals evaluate your system for:

• Broken, misaligned or leaking heads.
• Incorrect controller settings.
• Pressure and flow concerns.
• Distribution uniformity and other efficiency problems.

No repairs are made during the visit. You receive a detailed report outlining recommended improvements.

Improving irrigation efficiency protects your landscape and reduces the risk of violations. According to EPA WaterSense guidance, the average household saves more than 10,000 gallons of water per year by improving irrigation practices.

Efficient systems also help stabilize citywide demand during peak summer months, supporting long-term water reliability goals.

SmartIrrigation Assessments are available to Fort Worth water utility customers with in-ground automatic sprinkler systems. Customers must not have previously received an evaluation through the City. Appointments are limited.
