JUNEAU, Alaska - August's statewide job count was up by 2,900, or 0.8 percent, from August 2024.

Construction added 1,000 jobs over the year, mainly through North Slope oil and gas and federally funded infrastructure projects. Those projects also spurred growth in transportation, warehousing and utilities (300) and professional and business services (200). The oil and gas industry added 500 jobs.

Health care's strong growth continued, adding 900 jobs since last August. Industries that lost jobs over the year included information (-300), retail (-100), wholesale (-100), leisure and hospitality (-100), and financial activities (-100).

State government employment was up 200 from last year, local government was down 200, and federal government was down 100.

Alaska's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in August, and the U.S. rate ticked up slightly to 4.3 percent.
