The University of Pittsburgh remained in the top 2% of schools worldwide in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities ranking. Out of more than 2,250 universities in 100-plus countries, Pitt came in at No. 57, tied with the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
Thirty-four Pitt programs were included in the publication's subject rankings, with surgery leading the way. The School of Medicine program, which maintained its No. 7 global placement, has been a top-10 program for the past six years.
Five other programs - four of them in Pitt's schools of health sciences - cracked the top 25 of the global lists, including clinical medicine, which leapt five spots to No. 19. The University's other top subjects were immunology (No. 22), infectious diseases (No. 23), psychiatry and psychology (No. 25) and neuroscience and behavior (No. 25).
This list follows the publication's recent Best Graduate Schools rankings, in which seven Pitt health sciences specialities placed in the top 10 nationally.
Several Pitt schools saw competitive global placements: Along with its neuroscience ranking, the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences picked up top-60 rankings for cell biology (No. 35) and arts and humanities (No. 55). The School of Education chimed in at No. 61 for education and educational research. And for the School of Medicine, its offerings in oncology (No. 34), gastroenterology and hepatology (No. 58), pharmacology and toxicology (No. 61), and endocrinology and metabolism (No. 64) are among the world's best.
The list also demonstrated Pitt's commitment and growth in the field of space science. Powered by new programming in the Swanson School of Engineering and research efforts like the Trivedi Institute for Space and Global Biomedicine, the University rocketed up 28 spots in the category to a No. 81 global ranking.
