Today, I had the opportunity to meet with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, here in Washington D.C., at the White House, for the second time in the past year. We maintain a very good and highly constructive relationship. We are in regular contact on matters concerning bilateral relations and, of course, on international and regional developments. The Secretary of State possesses exceptional knowledge of regional affairs, particularly those concerning the Eastern Mediterranean.
We discussed issues concerning our two countries. The relationship between the United States and Greece is currently at its highest level. We are in an excellent position with regard to economic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector as well as in defense cooperation, trade, and economic diplomacy.
Regarding Euro-Atlantic relations, we had the opportunity to discuss the ties that are developing in this new and dynamic environment. The relationship between the United States and Europe is structural and developed after the Second World War. It is our shared conviction that we must continue to build on this relationship. Despite any challenges that may arise from time to time, it is particularly important that we join forces and promote the principles upon which the West was founded.
With regard to regional developments, we discussed issues of current international concern, including developments in the Middle East, Iran, Ukraine, and Sub-Saharan Africa - regions where significant global risks persist.
Once again, I would like to emphasize that Greece stands at the forefront of international developments, with a firm and consistent voice. We are among those who shape developments, rather than merely observe them. We act with a clear vision for our country, with vigour and strength, without defeatism, and with confidence.
