(COLUMBUS, OH) -State Representatives Tim Barhorst (R-Fort Loramie) and Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester) have introduced House Bill 629 - The Pharmacist Prescribing Authority Act - legislation that works to update Ohio law to expand the scope of practice for licensed pharmacists.
This bill would authorize pharmacists to prescribe and dispense medications for certain minor and self-limiting conditions, allowing patients to receive timely care directly from a pharmacist without requiring an additional visit to a physician.
"With the potential passage of HB 629, Ohio would be well positioned to align with future federal policy by expanding rural healthcare access through pharmacy test-and-treat services," said Rep. Barhorst.
The bill works to make targeted changes to multiple sections of the Ohio Revised Code to establish clear parameters for pharmacist prescribing, ensure appropriate professional standards, and maintain patient safety. By leveraging the training and accessibility of pharmacists, the legislation is intended to reduce barriers to care, improve efficiency within the healthcare system, and expand access to routine treatment options for Ohioans.
"Rural Ohioans shouldn't have to wait to access care. This bill allows pharmacists to step in to test and treat certain conditions, giving patients access to the care they need," said Rep. Gross.
House Bill 629 now awaits a committee assignment.
