MIT alumni awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine
Fellow MIT alumni Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation. Their work began in the 1980s when they worked together at MIT in the lab of Howard Robert Horvitz, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2002. They made their initial discovery in worms, where they discovered a new class of RNA molecules called microRNA that play a role in controlling gene expression.
MicroRNAs have been found to play a role in many biological functions and diseases in all animals, including humans. As the human genome contains at least 800 microRNAs, Dr. Ambros and Dr. Ruykun's work has opened up new fields of research and potential therapeutics. Abnormal regulation by microRNAs can contribute to various diseases, making them valuable markers for these conditions and potential targets for therapeutic intervention. Consequently, numerous clinical trials are exploring the use of microRNAs in diagnostics, and therapeutics across various fields, including cardiovascular and kidney diseases, cancer prognosis, and drug efficacy prediction. Given the quick progression of microRNAs in the clinic, this field will likely continue to grow and lead the next generation of drug therapies.
