RICHMOND, VA - Governor Abigail Spanberger yesterday on NBC Nightly News echoed Virginians' serious concerns about the use of data center diesel backup generators - and highlighted her Executive Order 22 that will crack down on older backup generators and make Virginia the first state in the nation to conduct an analysis of their emissions.
"The expansion of data centers across Loudoun County should have been done vastly differently," said Governor Abigail Spanberger. "We are putting clear standards in place and ensuring that what has been permitted in years past is not permitted into the future."
In the years before Governor Spanberger was elected, data centers were built in Virginia with little regard from the Governor's Office for what those projects meant for the people who live in those communities. In her interview with NBC's Stephanie Gosk, the Governor made clear that she is ending the status quo and holding these facilities accountable.
Governor Spanberger last month unveiled her Data Center Accountability Framework - the most comprehensive and aggressive effort of its kind in the country. Many directives outlined in the Framework are already in effect, including expediting the development of data center noise regulations, banning state employees from entering into non-disclosure agreements for data center projects, and directing a thorough review of backup-generation operations by data centers.
