Shepherd Staff Celebrated During Annual Awards and Recognition Program

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - Shepherd University recognized the outstanding contributions of staff members during the 2026 Staff Awards ceremony held on Tuesday, April 7.
The event provided the entire community with the opportunity to celebrate the individuals whose dedication, service, and commitment stood out this year.

The annual Staff Awards honor classified and nonclassified staff members who exemplify excellence in service, student support, and institutional spirit.
Winners are chosen from nominations submitted by Shepherd staff, faculty, and students, as well as self-nominations.

Shepherd University President Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix welcomed attendees and presented the awards during the ceremony.

The 2026 Staff Award recipients are:

Above and Beyond Award
Sharon Carpenter, Department of Social and Applied Behavioral Sciences
The Above and Beyond Award recognizes a staff member who consistently exceeds standard expectations to assist others and accomplish goals. Carpenter was honored for her positive attitude, collaborative approach, and continued willingness to go beyond her role to support colleagues and the University's mission.

Excellent Service to Students Award
Wendy Baracka, Counseling
The Excellent Service to Students Award honors a staff member who demonstrates exceptional dedication to supporting Shepherd students. Baracka was recognized for her enthusiastic, compassionate, and effective service and for making a meaningful difference in the student experience.

Making a Difference Award
Madison Hale, Agricultural Innovation Center at Tabler Farm
The Making a Difference Award recognizes a staff member who serves as a change agent within the University community. Hale was selected for her commitment to the value and well-being of students and employees, as well as her impact on the Agricultural Innovation Center and the broader campus.

Ram Spirit Award
Yulia Ponomarenko Friman, Department of Natural and Physical Sciences
The Ram Spirit Award honors a staff member with at least five years of service who exemplifies long-term, passionate dedication to Shepherd University. Ponomarenko Friman was recognized for her sustained commitment, pride in the institution, and embodiment of Ram spirit.

Dr. Hendrix thanked all nominees and attendees, noting that the awards reflect the vital role staff members play in advancing Shepherd University's mission and fostering a supportive, student-centered environment.
