  • SAE International elected Bai as a Director at Large for the 2026-2027 term
  • Bai brings long-standing leadership in connected and automated mobility, including SAE technical standards and industry-government collaboration

Honda chief engineer Sue Bai, Ph.D., has been elected to the SAE International Board of Directors, becoming only the second board member from the company. Bai will serve as a Director at Large for the 2026-2027 term, reflecting her extensive leadership in helping Honda and the industry advance mobility technologies across both research and real-world deployment.

Bai has held leading roles on SAE V2X technical standards committees for many years, working to improve safety and mobility for a variety of road users, including vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and road workers. She has also served as the Honda technical leader for various industry-government collaborative projects.

SAE International is governed by a Board of Directors that provides leadership to connect SAE members with the organization and advance the Society's mission to serve a global network of engineers and technical experts through voluntary consensus standards, life-long learning, networking, and career development opportunities.

Over the course of nearly 20 years as an involved SAE member, Bai has been recognized with multiple honors, including SAE Top Contributor of the Year in 2021 and 2022; the SAE James M. Crawford Executive Standards Committee Outstanding Achievement Award in 2021; and the SAE InterRegs Standards and Regulations Award in 2019.

"I'm honored to be elected to the SAE International Board of Directors," said Bai. "SAE plays a vital role in bringing engineers together to solve complex mobility challenges, and I look forward to further contributing to work that advances knowledge and solutions for the benefit of society."

Bai is chief engineer of the Sustainability & Business Development business unit of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Previously, she was chief of data business for the Digital Service Development Division of American Honda, leading research focused on using transportation data to improve road infrastructure and the traffic environment. In this role, Bai supported the development of connected and automated vehicle technologies that enhance safety and mobility.

Bai joined Honda R&D Americas in 2004 in Detroit, Mich., building nearly two decades of expertise in advanced automotive research. She became a manager in the Automobile Technology Division at Honda R&D Americas before transitioning to Honda Research Institute USA, where she served as a division director. In these roles, Bai led efforts to advance Intelligent Transportation Systems, V2X, Connected and Automated Vehicle research and other transportation safety and mobility initiatives. This included industry-government collaboration, such as the Ohio Smart Mobility Corridor, the world's largest test bed for connected safety technologies.

Bai holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and a Master of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, both from the University of Michigan.
