SACRAMENTO - As Trump and Congressional Republicans' continue to attack health care and increase prices, California leaders are accelerating $90 million in critical funding to support women's health and reproductive care, making sure clinics and Planned Parenthood centers can remain open and provide services.

This investment is urgentlyneeded: Trump's federal defunding of health centers that provide safe abortions has already forced clinics to close and reduce servicesnationwide.

"Right now, the contrast is clear: Trump is dismantling health care and driving up costs, and Democrats in California are accelerating millions of dollars for women's health and maternal care, because families come first in our state. I'm proud to stand with Pro Tem Monique Limón and Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, two women leaders indispensable to this fight. Together, we're committed to protecting the affordable reproductive care California women already rely on - the best in the nation," Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivassaid.

Signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday, the legislationfasttracks $90 million to ensure clinics can continue serving Californians without interruption, providing family-planning, STD testing and treatment, cancer screenings, contraception, safe abortions and other essential care.

What California Leaders Are Saying

"California is taking steps to ensure people don't lose access to the range of services provided by Planned Parenthood. As the Trump administration's Big Ugly Bill punishes women and community health providers, California continues to stand in support of women's access to essential health services and reproductive freedom," Governor Gavin Newsomsaid.

"California values women, their choices, and their fundamental right to health care. While the Trump Administration relentlessly puts women's health and safety at risk, California's latest investments support Planned Parenthood and protect access to critical resources for women and families across the state," First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsomsaid.

"Today is both a proud and somber moment. The reality is, H.R. 1 has resulted in the loss of over $1.1 million per day for Planned Parenthood care centers across the state, and if California does not step up centers will shutter. This $90 million investment will help keep their doors open and ensure that Californians will still have access to affordable care. Thank you to Governor Gavin Newsom, Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, our leaders in the Legislative Women's Caucus and Senator Laird for their partnership in protecting women's rights," California State Senate Leader Monique Limónsaid.

"This early action matters-especially now," said Assembly Majority Leader, and Chair of the Legislative Women's Caucus, Cecilia Aguiar-Curry. "With the governor's signature today, California is making it clear that when Washington attacks access to healthcare, we step up. Our leaders will always fight to protect California families and their access to real healthcare. Providers and patients need certainty, and SB 106 delivers it."

"While Republicans in Washington are attacking Planned Parenthood, California Democrats are stepping up to protect reproductive freedom, abortion rights, and essential healthcare services. At a time when the federal government is turning its back on women's health, we will continue fighting to protect access to care for millions of Californians," Assembly Budget Chair Jesse Gabriel said.

California Leading the Nation in Affordable Women's Health Care

In many parts of California, Planned Parenthood is the only local provider for women's reproductive care, and often the lone affordable clinic or center that accepts Medi-Cal. The expedited funding signed into law on Wednesday helps keep health centers open, building on the more than $140 million already appropriated by the Legislature in 2025.

California Democrats have made historic strides to expand health-care access and lower costs. One-in-four Californians receive care from Planned Parenthood and it is the state's largest provider of reproductive and preventive health services through Medi-Cal and Family PACT - making Trump's defunding provision especially harmful.

Since day one, Speaker Rivas and his colleagues have condemnedTrump and Republicans' efforts to defund women's health care funding. California will continue to protect reproductive health services and ensure women and families have access to reliable, high-quality care.
