Day 12 of the Schumer Shutdown
It's now been 12 days since Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats, including Arizona Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly, have repeatedly blocked a funding bill to keep the government open. In fact, seven times Senate Democrats have now voted to keep hardworking Americans WITHOUT PAY and to put ILLEGALS OVER CITIZENS. Only five more Democrats are needed to do the right thing and open the government for the people.
In an interview, Schumer gleefully bragged this week that every day that there is a shutdown it gets better for Democrats. How twisted is this? While military families miss paychecks and airports face delays, Democrats are boasting that it's better for them. Translation: Democrats are purposely inflicting pain on the American people because they think that it makes it better politically. It's a disgusting and revealing statement that shows just how out of touch they are. Democrats want to take self-proclaimed victory laps as hardworking Americans' livelihoods hang in the balance. Instead of voting to fund the government, Democrats are more focused on political gamesmanship.
We learned about who is behind efforts by Senators Schumer, Gallego and Kelly to keep the government shut down. Axios reported this weekthat Senate Democrats are closely coordinating their government shutdown strategy with outside liberal groups. In fact, the leftist groups are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars attacking Republicans and are conducting weekly meetings and conversations with Schumer to coordinate the shutdown while making it abundantly clear that voting to fund and open the government is unacceptable and they are threatening Schumer that he can either be a part of their movement or be irrelevant to it.
As I have been pointing out, Republicans are committed to keeping the government open and have voted 13 times to pass clean funding bills while the Democrats had the majority the past four years with a Democrat in the White House. And not too long ago, Democrats have historically supported clean funding extensions to avoid a shutdown. In fact, they supported a clean funding extension just six months ago-Now they are holding it hostage for political purposes.
It's shameful that Democrats are willing to allow our troops, military families and federal law enforcement to go without pay so that the Democrats can appease their far-left Marxist base and Soros-backed activist groups.
Gosar Sponsors Bill to Pay Our Troops
Speaking of supporting our troops, this week, I joined over 100 Republicans in Congress in cosponsoring H.R. 5401, the Pay Our Troops Act. H.R. 5401 would ensure members of the United States Armed Forces would be paid during any government shutdowns. Our brave men in women in the military are some of our nation's greatest assets. It's imperative to ensure our service members are protected from reckless Democrat shutdowns so they continue to be compensated for their service and sacrifice. Any disagreements on policy should not hold hostage the paychecks for our brave service members. Instead, Arizona Democrat Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly have carelessly shut the government downand have made clear they view pay for troops and a functioning federal government as leverage to fight for their favorite pet political issues, including taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens. They need to vote to reopen the government. In fact, earlier this week I joined my Arizona colleagues in the House of Representatives in demanding that Senators Gallego and Kelly stop holding Arizonans hostageand put the American people first by doing what's right and voting to reopen the government. Their response: Arizonans can pound sand. As I noted, both senators have now voted seven times to block the government from opening.
Leftists Seek to Undermine Deportations
This week also saw far-left agitators attempt to force Arizona cities, including Phoenix and Mesa, to stop assisting ICE in deporting criminals. One must truly hate this country to take the side of illegals, but a variety of Soros-backed groups attempted to slow down or block city councils from coordinating with federal immigration officials in our communities.
Such coordination is both voluntary with contractual agreements (known as 287(g) agreements) and compelled under the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution. For those leftists who think state or local governments can impede federal law enforcement and federal laws, I would like to remind them that they will not prevail. Since President Trump took office, there have been record-breaking reductions in illegal immigration, with 1.6 million illegals self-deporting and over 400,000 deported by ICE, alongside historic lows in border apprehensions. In my opinion, this is still a paltry amount of the more than 20 millions who crossed the border illegally into Arizona. I will continue to work with the Trump Administration and sheriffs across our state to make sure our 287(g) agreements remain valid and enforced.
New York Attorney General Indicted
A federal grand jury indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James this week on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution. It's also alleged James and her father signed mortgage documents in 1983 stating they were husband and wife.
In case you forgot, Letitia James led a witch hunt against President Trump for supposedly inflating the value of his property to secure a more favorable loan. In a case derided as yet another political stunt, a New York Appeals Court judge would eventually toss out the civil fraud judgment against President Trump, but not before years of litigation and legal fees.
According to the indictment, it seems that Letitia James has on multiple occasions falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government-backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms. According to U.S. Attorney Halligan, the intentional criminal acts represent a "tremendous breach of public trust" and James, if convicted, faces up to 60 years in prison. Letitia James' indictment is a good reminder that no one is above the law. Be sure to check out the Tweet of the Week below…
