WASHINGTON - Today, communities across the country are honoring National Black Teacher Appreciation Day under this year's theme: Black Resistance and Joy: Celebrating Black Educators and Teaching as a Practice of Freedom. This national movement shines a light on the significant influence Black educators have had on generations of students.
"Black Teacher Appreciation Day is an opportunity to honor the profound impact Black educators have on our students, our schools, and our communities," said NEA President Becky Pringle. "Black teachers bring invaluable perspectives, inspire excellence, and help students see themselves reflected in the classroom."
The latest national data on teacher diversity shows that Black teachers make up 6% of the K-12 public school workforce, while Black students represent 15% of the student population.
"We must do more to support and retain Black educators, because when students see themselves in their teachers, it fosters belonging, confidence, and the belief that they, too, can achieve their dreams."
National Black Teacher Appreciation Day serves as a call to action to strengthen the recruitment, support, and advancement of Black educators, recognizing that their presence not only enriches classrooms but also plays a vital role in building more equitable and inclusive schools for all students.
The observance also acknowledges a critical chapter in American education history. Following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, more than 100,000 Black teachers and school leaders lost their jobs as schools serving all-Black student populations were closed and newly integrated schools often refused to hire them. This loss disrupted the pipeline of Black educators for generations.
"National Black Teacher Appreciation Day is both a celebration and a moment of reflection-honoring this history while recognizing the lasting legacy, resilience, and vital contributions of Black educators in shaping our students' futures," said Pringle.
