Insurance billing begins Feb. 2 at the Student Health Center

Student Health Center

January 26, 2026

The Student Health Center will begin health insurance billing for clinical services on Monday, Feb. 2. This change, shaped by student feedback and three years of project planning, will help us expand services, hire and retain qualified clinicians, and manage rising health care costs while keeping our focus on what matters most: student health and well-being.

What can students do to prepare?

We understand that insurance and billing can be difficult to navigate. We're here to help.

If you have health insurance:

  • Login to your MyWesternHealth patient portal and upload photos of the front and back of your insurance card.
  • Find out which insurance plans we accept by visiting our Insurance Plans and Resources page.
  • If your plan isn't listed, contact your insurance provider about out-of-network coverage; some let you submit your own claims for reimbursement.

New to using health insurance? Visit our Insurance 101 pagefor a quick guide.

If you are uninsured or prefer to pay out of pocket:

Students who are uninsured or who prefer to self-pay for SHC services will have charges billed to their student account instead. Self-pay charges are typically half the cost of a visit to an off-campus Whatcom County health care provider.

See a list of self-pay rates on our Self Pay Rates page.

If you want help lowering costs:

Our Bridge Program helps reduce the cost of general medical visits for:

  • Students without insurance
  • Students with high-deductible insurance plans
  • Students with out-of-network insurance plans

All enrolled students are eligible to sign up through their MyWesternHealth patient portal.

Learn more on our Bridge Program page.

If you are experiencing financial hardship:

You may qualify for our Financial Hardship Program, which offers reduced-cost or even no-cost care based on your ability to pay.

Details and eligibility requirements can be found on our Financial Hardship page.
