The Spanish, German and Swedish national police forces will work with their Jordanian counterparts on a European project launched with the aim of supporting the fight against organised crime in the country.
Jordan has a strategic geographical location, acting as a connecting point between Europe, Asia and Africa. While this location offers opportunities for regional cooperation, it also makes Jordan vulnerable to transnational organised crime, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, cybercrime and financial crime, which are exacerbated by the geopolitical instability of the region.
In response to this situation, Jordan's Public Security Directorate will work closely with European police forces from Spain, Germany and Sweden for two years on a twinning project aimed at combating organised crime in the country.
With European funding, the project will contribute to strengthening the capacity of Jordanian security forces to effectively combat transnational organised crime, in line with international and European best practices. In addition, the project will strengthen Jordan's national resilience to transnational organised crime.
The project aims to develop an operational and strategic framework, strengthen capacities to address emerging threats and improve inter-institutional coordination. It also aims to create a more resilient and effective law enforcement framework in Jordan.
By improving the operational capabilities and specialised units of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Special Branch (SB), the project not only strengthens Jordan's internal security, but also contributes to regional and global efforts to combat organised crime.
Thanks to the mobility of Spanish, German and Swedish specialists, the project will not only strengthen capacities in proactive investigation methods and data-driven decision-making, but will also promote the integration of advanced technologies and contribute to the expansion of cross-cutting cooperation and the exchange of expertise.
The inauguration, attended by several Jordanian and European representatives, was led by Major General Obeidallah Al-Ma'aytah, who welcomed all participants to Jordan and highlighted the security challenges facing the world today, such as cybercrime and cyberattacks, and the handling of cryptocurrencies. He also pointed out that this project is based on the exchange of experiences with European partners to contribute to the fight against different forms of organised crime.
For his part, the leading expert, Chief Inspector of the National Police Javier Cifuentes, together with his counterparts, Commander Abdullah Al-Shraideh, coordinator of the Special Division, and Commander Abdelhadi Altaha, coordinator of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), presented the main threats of organised crime that the project will address and closed the event.
It is a form of horizontal and direct cooperation between counterpart institutions with the aim of improving public policies and systems in areas such as security, justice, digitalisation and social cohesion. It is a unique form of cooperation through which Europe can make a difference in the world and accelerate progress towards achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
In Spain, FIAP is one of the institutions approved by the European Union to carry out twinning projects and has managed more than 300 to date, making it one of the leading European institutions in this field. FIAP therefore supports and collaborates with Spanish institutions that apply for twinning projects, from their formulation to their implementation, as well as in all administrative management and support to ensure the exchange of expertise.
