The City of Encinitas has completed five new pedestrian crossings as part of its annual Safe Routes to School program, helping create safer, more accessible connections for pedestrians throughout the community.
The improvements are designed to increase pedestrian visibility, address gaps in the City's walking network and make it easier for students, families and residents to travel on foot.
The Safe Routes to School program is part of the City's ongoing efforts to improve mobility and safety near schools. Through targeted infrastructure improvements, the program helps create more connected neighborhoods and encourages walking as an alternative way to get around.
Where Are the New Crossings?
The five completed locations:
South El Camino Real and Crest Drive: A new marked crosswalk with a pedestrian refuge island, pedestrian push buttons and additional signage to improve visibility and help pedestrians cross the intersection.
Birmingham Drive and Freda Lane: A new marked crosswalk on the west side of the intersection.
Morning Sun Drive and Springwood Lane: A new marked crosswalk to provide a designated crossing location.
Requeza Street and Beach Street: A new marked crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramp and pedestrian-activated flashing beacons to increase visibility.
North Vulcan Avenue and East Glaucus Street: A new marked crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps and pedestrian-activated flashing beacons to improve visibility and accessibility.
Building a More Walkable Encinitas
These improvements are part of the City's broader efforts to create a safer, more connected transportation network for people of all ages and abilities.
By addressing gaps in pedestrian infrastructure and improving crossing locations, the City continues to make progress toward a community where walking is a safer and more convenient option for everyday trips.
The improvements build on the City's long-standing Safe Routes to School efforts, which prioritize safer walking connections and improved access to schools throughout Encinitas.
